Hey ya’ll!  Have you even heard of Mexico Missouri?  It is a cute little town located almost dead center between Kansas City and St Louis on the northern side of Missouri.  Mexico Missouri is a short 2 hour drive from either city and this little town is full of Big Adventures

Plan to spend a weekend in Mexico, Missouri this September 2020 and Walk Back In Time at this living history event where you can see history in action.  Walk Back In Time, sponsored by the Audrain Historical Society, is held every other year on even years on the last weekend of September.

Extend your weekend to explore this small town and the big adventures you will find in Mexico, MO.

5 Day Itinerary in Mexico, MO

Day 1 – Thursday

Rothwell Park in Moberly and the Centralia Battlefield in Centralia are both worth a visit.  Rothwell Park, a recreational destination, features the Thompson Campground, disc golf, fishing and boating and a miniature railroad that transports passengers of all ages on a one mile adventure.  Centralia Battefield is the site of civil war battle on September 27, 1864.

Day 2 – Friday

Only 30 minutes from Mexico, Pinnacles Nature Park is home to a unique geologic formation.  “About 250 million years ago Boone County was covered by a shallow sea. This sea teemed with life and the fossilized remains of these ancient sea creatures are preserved in the Burlington limestone bedrock that composes the “Pinnacles” rock formations here. Through millennia Rocky Fork and Silver Fork Creeks have down cut through this bedrock creating the fascinating rock formations we see here today. Look for soaring turkey vultures above and cricket frogs along the creek below on summer days.”

Day 5 Monday

In Columbia, check out Rock Bridge Memorial State Park.  “The park contains some of the most popular hiking trails in the state and also offers solitude while hiking in the Gans Creek Wild Area. Visitors can also see a large cave system with its rock bridge, sinkholes, a spring and underground stream at the Devil’s Icebox. You can explore Connor’s Cave in the light of the opening for a taste of the underground world.”

Camping is available right in town at Lakeview Campgrounds in Lakeview Park.  RV sites at this campground are only $10 for nonresidents and $5 for a tent site.  There are about 16 RV sites at this campground and all sites are first come first serve.  Pets are allowed on specific sites.  Within an hour of Mexico, you can make reservations at Finger Lakes State Park in Columbia, one of the two parks in the Missouri State Park System that has ATV trails.  Or check out Thompson Campground in Moberly, MO.

If you are more of the glamping type – there is AP Green House Bed and Breakfast right in town.  This B&B features a hot tub and of course a hot breakfast.

Other events throughout the year in this area are the Heritage and Roots N Blues N BBQ Festivals in Columbia, the Boone County Fair in Sturgeon and the Peddler’s Jamboree, a bicycle music festival on the Katy Trail, starting in Columbia with an overnight stay in Boonville’s Kemper Park.

Whether you are looking for a quick weekend trip or a longer adventure, this area has so much to do and see.  Hiking, Biking, horseback riding and ATV trails, lots of historical sites, and golf and shopping are part of the adventure if you decide to visit Mexico Missouri!
